Speedway eliminates Formula One race

Via the Indy Star

A stormy eight-year relationship between Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Formula One ended today with the announcement the international racing series would not return in 2008.

IMS chairman Tony George and F-1 boss Bernie Ecclestone could not reach an agreement on a sanctioning fee to continue the U.S. Grand Prix. George had set today as a deadline for a new contract.

As long as the pompous Ecclestone is in charge of F1, that is fine by me.  I have never been to an F1 event as it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me (parade “racing” and team “racing”) and I think a lot of Americans are in the same boat.  The main downside is that it will lose the city quite a bit of business for that week, but hey, we’re building a bigger and better convention center, right?   And next year the MotoGP comes to town, so that should help out and hopefully that will be a bit better than the GP car racing.

The F1 races were NOT American racing, but they were still racing and they were fun to watch and to attend such an international event. I never missed a race here until this past one. Ecclestone may be a jerk, but Indianapolis is the bigger idiot for letting this one slip away. They should have ponied up whatever money Tony George couldn’t commit to and make sure this never left the city. It’s going to take a whole lot of motorcylces and race fans to compenstate for the $100M+ loss the city is going to feel from losing F1.

Check this out !! Best F1 book I’ve read in years! Puts Schummy in a different “light”. Get hold of it any way you can! This has to be the ultimate, ‘cult’ racing novel of all time!!

You know this so sad. Not having F1 run at the top Raceway in the USA is not right. Of course I wouldn’t be to mad if they come back to Long Beach. Still this situation is as bad as the idea of the NFL playing the Super Bowl in some other part of the world.
